ANDREA MENDES IS RESHAPING THE FASHION INDUSTRY

Andrea’s journey began in 2022 during her second year at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute (AMFI), where she felt a strong calling to make a meaningful impact on the fashion industry. Observing a significant gap in representation within fashion and media, Andrea set out to create a platform that challenges the status quo and amplifies underrepresented voices. I Am Archive is her answer to this need a space where culture, individuality, and storytelling take center stage.

What gap or need did you see in the industry that inspired you to create this platform?

I realized so many unique, meaningful brands were missing the spotlight they deserved. Finding fresh, standout fashion brands with distinctive aesthetics felt like a challenge, especially for those who crave something different, whether they’re stylists, publicists, or just true fashion lovers. Being in the industry, I saw how often people stay in their own bubbles, completely missing the next wave of designers, brands, and icons. I wanted to bridge this gap by creating a space where fashion’s evolving zeitgeist and innovative voices are celebrated.

I Am Archive explores fashion, identity, and culture. Can you tell us more about your vision for the platform and its core mission?

Absolutely! Our mission is to explore the relationship between fashion, identity, and meaning. I’ve always been drawn to brands that stand out, brands that tell a story and have a purpose. Fashion is about more than just clothing, it’s about connection, storytelling, and culture. At I Am Archive, we aim to highlight these narratives, whether they stem from brands, personal style, or cultural influences.

The name ‘I Am’ originates from my own name (Imani Andrea Mendes) but also reflects the Dutch phrase “Ik ben,” meaning ‘I am’. It’s about identity: who you are behind the brand, behind the clothing. We provide a platform for these stories, showcasing style, cultural influences, and ultimately offering a space where people can discover and shop these unique creations.

Representation is often discussed, but what does true inclusivity in the fashion world look like to you?

To me, inclusivity means true acceptance—embracing and understanding diverse worlds, whether defined by ethnicity, background, or perspective. As a Black woman, I bring this vision to life by celebrating my culture and weaving it into every aspect of I Am Archive. Black culture is a driven force in the fashion and media landscape, and I’m passionate about amplifying its influence and ensuring it gets the recognition it deserves.

How have you experienced the creative and fashion industry as a woman of color? And are there challenges that stand out in your journey?

Being a woman of color in the creative industry often means starting at a disadvantage and working twice as hard to prove yourself. But that challenge has never discouraged me, it’s fueled my drive to defy expectations and break barriers.

Far too often, I find myself as one of the few, if not the only, person of color in the room. My mission is to change that by opening doors for others and ensuring we all have a seat at the table. Representation is vital, and I want to show that we belong in every space, whether it’s within brands, magazines, or major publications.

Founding my own company has been my way of claiming that space and rewriting the narrative. I’m not waiting for anyone’s approval — I’m building my dreams on my own terms. Why wait for permission when you can create the future yourself.

How has building a platform like I Am Archive allowed you to connect with others in the industry or beyond?

Over the years, I have cultivated meaningful relationships within the fashion industry, and I Am Archive has only strengthened those connections. The platform has opened doors to collaborate with brand owners and other inspiring individuals, creating opportunities to exchange ideas and build together. These relationships are valuable and continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the growth and vision of I Am Archive.

What systemic changes do you hope the platform will help influence, both within the creative industry and in societal perceptions of culture and identity?

I aspire to inspire a shift in how people interact with fashion—transforming it from a purely transactional experience into one rooted in meaningful connections with their clothing. By highlighting brands that embody rich stories and cultural depth, we aim to encourage thoughtful engagement, prompting individuals to reflect on their purchasing choices and the deeper relationship they hold with fashion.

What advice would you give to young creatives, particularly women of color, who want to carve out their own space in fashion or media?

Just start. Don’t be afraid to begin at the bottom—you can only go up from there. Find someone who inspires you, especially someone of color, and reach out to them. Send a message, ask for a coffee chat, or set up a call to learn from their journey. If no one offers help, create opportunities for yourself. You’ll learn so much along the way. Stay active by following industry news, volunteering, or working on your own projects. The key is to keep moving forward and never be afraid to ask for guidance.
